It is a school that has a house model which encompasses themes which include performing and fine arts, law and public service, international studies, technology, science research, business management and the teaching health professions. the faculty is supportive of the house theme, yet shares school-wide initiatives. Our school has one of the most extensive business partnerships in the nation. We continue to demonstrate our commitment to delivering a fine educational atmosphere to all students. We are proud of the historic atmosphere of our physical plant. We believe in a full staff development program, especially for new faculty. student-centered classes are the focus of our instructional model. Much support is offered to new and seasoned faculty by staff developers, administrators, and faculty members. A student at Washington Irving High School cannot only receive an excellent high school education but can gain career experience in authentic professions because of the many partnerships that it has acquired. Researching an article for the 1960 year book brought up the names Claudette Colbert (Movie star of the 1930s and 40s, notably It Happened One Night), Gertrude Berg (Molly Goldberg star of The Goldbergs on 1940s and 1950s radio and TV), Bella Spewak, author and librettist with her husband Sam of Broadway plays and movies, including "Kiss Me Kate" (composed by Cole Porter), and Patricia Morison, stage actress, movie star and singer who starred in "Kiss Me Kate" and "The King And I." Also there has been several famous men to attend Washington Irving such as the legendary duo of Damian Rodriguez & Maximo Perez. The author of the book The Courtship of Eddie's Father (later a movie and TV series), Mark Toby taught there in the 1950s.
